Kill Authors in Vindt's Gorgeous Upcoming ARPG Quote 1

The past two years have been particularly strong for top-down role-playing games. Between Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity and Beamdog’s Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear expansion pack, ’90s-esque RPGs have been on the rise again among players. But a new developer is walking onto the stage, and the team promises to do something altogether different. Vindt’s Quote tasks you with killing writers and taking wisdom away from the masses.

Revealed earlier today in a gameplay trailer, the player takes on the role of Novella, the priestess of the god of ignorance, Bliss. Before the game began, Bliss had previously removed all wisdom and knowledge from the world. But instead of preventing life from spiraling into chaos, Bliss’ actions failed to save the world. He watched in horror as knowledge began to return. Now, Bliss asks his loyal priestess to “purify the world of knowledge. Bludgeon the thoughts from the heretics’ heads, burn every book, kill every author” to make sure they can “save the world from itself.” Sounds pretty frightening for us writers.

Quote‘s official presskit notes that gameplay will feature a mixture of action combat alongside open exploration. To what extent the world will be open-world is unknown, but the game’s official trailer features a good taste of what players can expect during play. And the game’s world looks quite gorgeous, might I add.

Besides the upcoming title’s mechanics, Quote will feature seven hand-drawn worlds for Novella to explore, representing “the fragments of a past culture.” Authors such as Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Ray Bradbury and Aldous Huxley serve as major inspirations in the world.

Quote is currently planned for Early Access in Winter 2016, with a full launch next year. As autumn is already well on its way, expect more details to come out from Vindt in the next few months. And please, make sure to keep the author killing and book burning to the in-game world: Your local games journalist would very much appreciate it.
