KOTOR 2 Restored Content DLC Cancelled Due to "Third Party" Objections, Says Aspyr

According to Aspyr Media, the “Restored Content” DLC for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords was canceled due to a “third party” objection.

A few weeks before the re-release of KOTOR 2, Aspyr released a trailer that announced the Restored Content DLC or the Nintendo Switch version of the game. This DLC was based on the Restored Content mod that was created by fans back in 2015. KOTOR 2 was infamous for feeling unfinished, with the game rushed to release, causing Obsidian to cut out or not be able to complete a helping of content for the game.

The announcement simply listed the DLC as “coming soon,” but a year later, in June 2023, Aspyr announced it was cancelled entirely. This, of course, led to many fans being upset, with one fan suing Aspyr over the affair, saying he “felt completely duped.” The lawsuit was originally spotted by The Gamer.

Last month, Aspyr asked a court to throw out the suit, as the company says they provided ample relief to plaintiffs when KOTOR 2 owners were offered a free extra game. The plaintiff of the lawsuit is requesting a trial by jury, seeking lawyers’ fees and costs as well as other relief “including, but not limited to, the remedy of disgorgement.”

What’s really interesting, however, is a court filing that finally gives us a little more insight into the cancellation of the DLC.

As reported by Axios, the court filing from Aspyr states, “Aspyr believed it would be able to release the content, but a third party objected, and Aspyr was unable to do so.”

It’s unclear just who that third party would be, but there are a lot of groups wrapped up in KOTOR 2, including developer Obsidian Entertainment (now owned by Microsoft), Lucasfilm (now owned by Disney), the modders behind the Restored Content mode, and more.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords is available on PC and Nintendo Switch.
