Marvel’s Eternals Dives Into the Film’s Ten New Heroes and a Trailer (updated Aug 19)

In anticipation of the MCU’s newest team of superheroes, the Eternals, Entertainment Weekly has released a guide introducing each of the new heroes.

MCU fans not familiar with the source material of the Eternals can learn more about them. The guide goes through the movie’s ten superheroes through details and interviews with the actors portraying the characters on the big screen.

For anyone unfamiliar, Eternals was created by Jack Kirby himself in the 1970s after his short tenure with Marvel’s rival, DC. The Eternals themselves are immortal humanoid aliens genetically engineered by the godlike Celestials who lived on the planet of Olympia. In the comics, the Celestials aren’t known just for the creation of the Eternals but Earth’s early development and the creation of the mutant x-gene too.

MCU experts will remember when the Celestial lore was first referenced in James Gunn’s 2014 film, Guardians of the Galaxy. A certain group of Eternals is sent to Earth by the Celestials to fight against the evil Deviants and to defend humanity. That was 7,000 years ago and they have been watching over the plant in silence.

In addition to the guide, Entertainment Weekly has released an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the movie. The 26th MCU movie is being directed by 39-year-old Oscar winner, Chloé Zhao.

The director’s approach to the movie was pushing Marvel to let her shoot on location as much as possible while leaving the blue screens in the studio. When footage of the film was first released, one of the many compliments was how it was shot as well as its visuals, thanks in part to Zhao’s practical approach.

One of the first scenes she shot in Eternals was when their arrival on Earth all the way back in 5,000 B.C. Her cast and crew ventured to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands for the specific location which featured the Eternals gathering on a rugged ledge overlooking the sea.

“We had our whole cast standing on that cliff in their costumes, and we played really loud operatic music on the speaker, just blasting that through the wind,” Zhao revealed. “It was probably the windiest cliff that I have ever been on. You’d have to have a helicopter to achieve the wind that we had that day,”

“Seeing my cast coming together in formation as the Eternals, with the beauty of this ancient-looking landscape, and the ocean and the sky, that was… pretty awesome.”

Zhao goes more into more behind-the-scenes stories in the Entertainment Weekly article. The Eternals is set to release in theatres on November 5th.
