New Madame Web set photos hint at Emma Roberts’ mystery role in the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe project, fueling speculation on what’s to come.
With the success of the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) built by Tom Holland’s performance, Madame Web has been gaining traction as arguably the most anticipated film for the SSU. New set photos were brought to the internet’s attention by the Twitter account, Marvel Updates. The new photos revealed that Emma Roberts’ unknown character would be pregnant. While a lot has been speculated, there have been a lot of details confirmed through recent set photos for Madame Web.
After the successful 2015 Sony/Disney partnership on the Spider Man Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, Sony has been working to build out their own Marvel film universe. These films included projects like Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius. Other Spider-Man spin-off films announced were Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and El Muerto. Some sources have also added Madame Teia to this list of upcoming projects.
Madame Web has been expected to be huge with its extensive list of A-list actors and experienced crew. Dakota Johnson will be leading as the iconic Madame Web/Julia Carpenter character with Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Adam Scott. The crew includes director, S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) and writers from Morbius film, Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.
Rumours have posited that Scott could be a certain version of Peter Parker and Roberts could be Gwen Stacy, if there will be any sort of Spidey cameo in the film. Fans have also stated Roberts could be Mary Jane (a blonde version I guess) since Earth-616 MJ had gotten pregnant before when adult Peter lost his powers, but ultimately lost the baby when Alison Mongrain poisoned her.
Another less likely theory was that Roberts’ character could be Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman who fought crime while pregnant in a 2015 comic run. This theory was immediately quashed as there were no overlap of Madame Webs (Julia Carpenter or Cassandra Webb) in these comics.
Johnson was already spotted filming in Madame Web’s well-known red coat a few days ago and Scott was spotted with a plain old plaid shirt and jeans walking the streets. It could be possible that Scott could be playing a powerless Peter and could be trying to focus on his photojournalism career.
The original plot of Madame Web was in Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr.’s comic run back in 1980 with Cassandra Webb, a blind, older woman who had the psychic ability to see into the Spider-Verse—sensing impending danger. Julia Carpenter was known to inherit the same powers as Cassandra in later comics, where she played a role in the 2014 Spider-Verse event that has inspired many feature film storylines. As a younger take on the Madame Web role, this is most likely the route the film will take.
The Euphoria actor, Sweeney also had an undisclosed role but said in a recent interview she was a “big fan” of the Marvel Universe and read several comic books preparing for the film. Madame Web is slated to be released in theatres on October 6, 2023. With a far-off release date over a year from now, a trailer or teaser would be a little too early to call yet. The movie has kept its plot and character details under heavy wraps but these set leaks have given some idea to the 2000s setting for this version of Madame Web as production continues.
