Oculus Link Cable released for Quest headsets before Christmas

Oculus Link Cable released for Quest headsets before Christmas

Quest users can now access their library of Oculus Rift and SteamVR games on PCs through the Oculus Link cable.

Released last week, it provides a five-meter length connection through USB-Type C into your gaming computer and streams PC-based VR titles into the Quest.

Announced at Facebook’s Oculus Connect 6 event in September, the feature was designed to bridge the gap between content for mobile-based Quest users and Rift S users.

This also means the Quest is compatible with higher-end titles such as Stormland, Asgard’s Wrath and No Man’s Sky VR which exclusively ran on Rift headsets before Link.

It also paves the way for upcoming games including Half-Life: Alyx, which can also be played over the Quest. But streaming from the PC also affects the graphic fidelity on the headset and varies based on what your PC can deliver.

Though the official Link cable was released this month, a beta for the feature was released for Quest users last month and worked with most third-party USB 3.0 to USB C cables.

Interestingly, a testing video on YouTube by Kolarias confirms the Quest shares the Rift’s home and desktop menus. The Rift’s Dash and Home features let users create their own apartment hubs and even use their computers with virtual peripherals.

Quest owners will need a recommended minimum Intel i5-4590 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X processor, with an AMD 400 series or a GTX 970 graphics card.

Once your headset is plugged in, the Oculus desktop application recognizes the Quest and Touch as PC VR headsets.

According to the cable specs, it also charges the Quest with a 3A power supply and delivers a 5 Gbps bandwidth for streaming.

You can find the Oculus Link Headset Cable available to order on the company’s accessories page, but a report by UploadVR suggests quantities are limited and new shipments are expected at the start of 2020.
