Earlier today, during Facebook Connect, the social media giant took the time to announce a new standalone VR headset, the Oculus Quest 2. Additionally, the company announced that they would be ending support future support for PC oriented VR headsets, focusing instead on standalone devices.
Two models will be available for the Oculus Quest 2, a 64GB and 256GB variant for $300 and $400 USD, respectively. As mentioned, both models of the Oculus Quest 2 will be AIOs meaning it will function independently of a computer. Thankfully, the device will still support Oculus Link, allowing optional connectivity to a powerful gaming desktop or laptop, for titles such as the upcoming Medal of Honor VR game.
In terms of spec upgrades, the new Oculus Quest 2 will feature the latest Qualcomm SnapdragonXR2 processor with 6GB of RAM, and an impressive 1832×1920 resolution LCD screen per left and right eye. The default refresh rate of the Oculus Quest 2 will be at 72Hz like its predecessor, but an optional toggle that allows 90Hz will also be present, opening the door to smoother experiences.
The new stand-alone policy seems to be in place to encourage a more seamless experience for the user, eliminating the need for a gaming PC or laptop, however, the inclusion of the Oculus Link support should make VR enthusiasts looking a more serious experience, happy. It should be noted that the upcoming headsets will require users’ to sign up for Facebook if they haven’t done so already, indicating a stronger push from the company in wanting to adopt and bring VR to its social media platform.
When untethered, the Oculus Quest 2 is estimated to have a battery life of two to three hours on a single charge. Both the 64GB and 256GB model of the Oculus Quest 2 will be available for purchase this Fall, on October 13 2020.
