Ouya Launch Delayed to June 25

The Ouya, an Android-based console, will not hit retail stores on June 4 as planned. Instead, CEO Julie Uhrman says the Ouya will be released on June 25, in order to meet the high demand at retail stores.

Uhrman spoke to Joystiq today, highlighting the incredibly positive reactions from retail partners. So, in order stay in tune with their demands, Urhman made the decision to push back the Ouya’s launch by three weeks. The new launch date of June 25, according to Uhrman, will allow Ouya to create more units and have enough stock for retail.

The Ouya’s controller issues also accounted for the reasons for the console to be pushed back three weeks. Uhrman acknowledges the Ouya’s controller buttons can be quite sticky underneath the faceplate. She says the issue has been resolved, and decided to increase the buttonholes.

June 25 is important to date because this year’s E3 would be two weeks after. For the most part, both the next-generation PlayStation and Xbox have dominated the gaming stratosphere.

Joystiq reported today Ouya secured $15 million in venture capital funding, with former EA chief creative officer Bing Gordon jumping on board to help with marketing and promotion efforts.
