After countless leaks, rumours, and theories, Sony has finally unveiled the elusive new PlayStation 5 model and it is a sleeker design option with the power of the original PS5.
This Holiday Season, Sony is unleashing a redesigned PlayStation 5 console for the space-conscious. Fans have speculated for months about the existence of a slimmer PS5 and whether or not the new design would offer a removable disc tray. To both big speculations, Sony has just said ‘yes’ in a new blog post complete with a teaser on the redesign that can be seen below.
The new PlayStation 5 has sleek new dimensions, boasting a reduction in volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% and 24% (for the model that arrives with the attachable disc tray). What’s interesting is that it seems both console variants have the ability to remove and reattach a disc tray at a whim, so fans visiting a friend’s house without a disc tray can just bring it with them if needed. The redesign also increases the number of side panels on the console from two to four.
A striking detail Sony has also revealed regarding the new PlayStation 5 redesign is Senior Director at SIE Content Communications, Sid Shuman writes, “Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.” This confirms the original design of the PS5 has numbered days left when the redesign launches.
How To Get A Redesigned PlayStation 5
The new PS5 model will launch starting in November in preparation for the Holiday season. Fans will be able to secure one first through the Sony PlayStation Direct website, with the console rolling out to other retailers after that point.
Pricing is as follows: PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will retail at $499.99 USD, whereas the PS5 without the drive will retail at $449.99 USD. Fans will also have the option to purchase the disc drive separately for $79.99 USD. The new PlayStation 5 model launches with an internal SSD of 1TB, an improvement over the 825GB of the standard with the disc drive. This time around, the vertical stand will not come included with the PS5; instead, fans will have to purchase it separately for $29.99 USD, and it’s compatible with original PS5 models.
