RDR2 and Assassin's Creed Data Prove that Gamers are Finishing Less Games 3

As games get longer and more complex, it becomes harder and harder to find the time to complete them, and with so many upcoming releases, it becomes tempting to simply move on -And as recent data shows, that’s exactly what players are doing.

The data comes from GameRevolution, which decided to analyze the 12 most exciting PS4 releases of 2018 and find out just exactly how many players were beating them, this was their findings:

Read Dead Redemption 2: 22%

Why I believe it has this rate: This game is huge, there is so much to do, and it is all just as fun as the main story, so at the end of the day, why do it?

Why I believe it has this rate: A strictly story-based game that is extremely engaging and personal to the player, overall a must beat.

Why I believe it has this rate: Far Cry 5 may be a long game, but it gets it right in the sense that the story is not only intriguing as it is rewarding. Completing missions constantly gives the player access to new weapons and fun places to explore.

Dead Cells: 15%

Why I believe it has this rate: Dead Cells is an extremely tough game, and with so many different paths to go through, its no wonder that this 200 hour venture is hardly ever beaten.

Why I believe it has this rate: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a huge game, and with so many side-quests to undertake and places to explore, it becomes easy to see why the main story may eventually lose its appeal.

Persona 5: 34.8%

Why I believe it has this rate: Persona 5 isn’t a necessarily long game, but being a JRPG, the multiple avenues that players can partake may easily turn into a game in it of itself.

Yakuza Kiwami 2: 49.1%

Why I believe it has this rate: Yakuza Kiwami 2 is short, straight forward and extremely entertaining, it makes sense that people stick through with this one.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: 41.7%

Rdr2 And Assassin'S Creed Data Prove That Gamers Are Finishing Less Games

Why I believe it has this rate: Uncharted 4 is strictly a story game, and with that comes the removal of additional side-quests and explorations that would drive away players from beating Drake’s last journey.

Detroit: Become Human: 61.7%

Why I believe it has this rate: Again, a story title, same principle applies.

Darksiders 3: 37.9%

Rdr2 And Assassin'S Creed Data Prove That Gamers Are Finishing Less Games

Why I believe it has this rate: A story game with a long story and some micro-managing, it makes sense that some find it too much to handle, but overall most people beat it.

Crash Bandicoot: 12.6%

Rdr2 And Assassin'S Creed Data Prove That Gamers Are Finishing Less Games

Why I believe it has this rate: This is objectively a hard game, and considering it is a remake, not many may have found it all that exciting to stick it out throughout all three games

With this list, a few things stand out as oddly interesting: Firstly, games that were over 20 hours had drastically lower beat rates. Secondly, games that were strictly focused on story-telling without much exploration tended to be beat much more than games that entice exploration. Lastly, games that are considered objectively hard had the lowest beat rates on this list. What does this tells us, well, maybe we don’t have as many hours to our disposal as developers like to believe, or maybe living the life of a character has become more important than beating a pre-defined storyline.
