Sony Announces PlayStation Showcase Event for September 9th

Sony has announced it will be live-streaming a new PlayStation Showcase event on September 9th.

The event will be around 40 minutes and will focus on giving PlayStation owners a sneak peek into the PS5 games that are coming this “holiday and beyond”. Sony adds that the PlayStation Showcase will feature “updates from PlayStation Studios and some of the industry’s most imaginative developers.” In addition, after the event, a post-show is scheduled to go a bit more in depth into those updates from some studio teams featured in the PlayStation Showcase.

If you’re hoping to finally get a look at PlayStation’s next-gen VR headset, PlayStation VR 2 (unofficial title) well don’t. The announcement post for the event on the PlayStation Blog has made it clear that PlayStation’s upcoming VR headset and its controller won’t make an appearance at the showcase. Although that doesn’t mean Information isn’t coming, news on the VR device will reportedly be revealed sometime early next year with a launch slated for holiday 2022.

The upcoming PlayStation Showcase news is significant as PlayStation has not held a showcase since September of last year. Since then, Sony has held State of Play presentations, which are usually more of a smaller-scaled event compared to the showcase. The branding of this event as a “PlayStation Showcase” stream hints that we’ll be getting more high-profile PlayStation Studios and third-party announcements next week during the stream.

As far as what to expect as far as new announcements don’t expect Horizon: Forbidden West news as we already found out from Opening Night Live that the Horizon follow-up has been officially delayed to February 2022. Other games that we could get a look at are Gran Turismo 7 and the anticipated untitled God of War Sequel. As far as third-party, Final fantasy XVI might make an appearance with at least a release window possibly shown.

While the showcase is expected to be focused on AAA-level titles that doesn’t mean indie games won’t have a presence at the show. PlayStation has teased that titles featured at the PlayStation Showcase will come from the “industry’s most imaginative developers”.

The PlayStation Showcase event is set to broadcast on live streaming platforms on September 9th at 4 PM ET.
