Studio Ghibli is a name synonymous with anime quality, and their latest animated feature The Boy and the Heron received a new trailer today ahead of its TIFF 2023 premiere, complete with the signature Hayao Miyazaki art style.
Studio Ghibli is a legendary anime production studio with many accolades under its belt, and the final film in Hayao Miyazaki’s catalogue, The Boy and the Heron bleeds the studio’s traditional art style and will premiere to Global audiences at the TIFF 2023 this week. Today, the studio released a trailer for the film on X (formerly Twitter) and it can be seen below ahead of its premiere.
The Boy and the Heron takes place in 1943 during the Pacific War and the audience is inserted into the POV of 12-year-old Mahito Maki. After a fire takes the life of his mother, his father subsequently marries his late wife’s younger sister Natsuko, and they relocate to a countryside estate filled with older maids and importantly a grey heron. While struggling to fit in and dealing with the grief of his mother’s death, Mahito faces many hardships in the sudden traumatic turn his life has taken. Especially with the strained relationship with his aunt-turned-stepmother. Like the other masterpieces in Miyazaki’s portfolio, The Boy and the Heron provides stellar artwork while attempting to deliver a thought-provoking narrative.
The Boy and the Heron, like other Studio Ghibli productions, will hit North American theatres and IMAX first on December 8, but the film will premiere to attendees at TIFF 2023 this week. Fans can shoot over to the official Studio Ghibli website for more information.
