Surge in Dragon’s Dogma Players Following Game Sequel Announcement

Dragon’s Dogma 2 was announced last week, which sparked the first game’s player count to its highest since the game’s release ten years ago.

After about a decade, the sequel is finally coming! Capcom stopped tiptoeing around the big question and officially announced Dragon’s Dogma 2. Fans of the game have been waiting since 2012 for news on a sequel and can now rest assured that the future is bright. Passions for the game were reignited as Dragon’s Dogma hit its highest peak concurrent player count on Steam in over six years.

The game attracted over 6,500 players this past weekend, on June 19. The game used to have about 27,000 concurrent players at release but dropped after its spike in February 2016. The game was known to have dropped to about 1,000 to 2,000 players on a daily basis. The numbers were brought to attention by Twitter user @Benji-Sales, which displayed the Steam player counts.

Clearly, there has been much hype for the sequel. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the complete edition of the first game and will be on sale until June 23, making it an absolute steal to relive moments and play now. The game is also a part of the Summer 20222 Capcom bundle on Humble Bundle—said to have close to 200,000 bundles in sales. This means players could grab Monster Hunter World, Devil May Cry, Street Fighter 5, and Dragon’s Dogma for one hell of a sale price.

Not many details were revealed on Dragon’s Dogma 2, other than the fact that the original series, Hideaki Itsuno will be returning and the logo was unveiled. They also said the game was currently under development and would be using their iconic RE Engine, which will be used in the Resident Evil 4 remake and Street Fighter 6. What has been confirmed is that fans are excited for this gem to be getting a sequel.

Itsuno stated in the celebratory stream, “Sorry to have kept you waiting… Dragon’s Dogma 2 is currently in development. Everyone in the development team is hard at work creating a game that we hope you will enjoy. Please look forward to it!”

The game has been known for its excellent action and RPG hack-and-slash gameplay. The game set itself apart from other RPGs like the Elder Scrolls games, The Witcher games or the torturous Dark Souls games in being a slow travelling game that used to have no fast travel function. This uniqueness and its terrifying enemies would haunt players, especially when travelling around in pitch blackness—at least you have pawns to keep you company.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is currently available to play on PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Steam (PC).
