The Last Of Us Part II Will Not Have Multiplayer 2

Developer Naughty Dog has announced that, unlike its predecessor, The Last of Us Part II will not have any multiplayer.

The news came yesterday first as an announcement, and then as a longer clarification. Although The Last of Us shipped with a multiplayer mode (that went on to garner a surprise following for its originality), its sequel will lack one, with development resources instead going solely into the campaign. It appears that they have plans for something involving The Last of Us’ multiplayer in the future, but what that is is currently unclear. Perhaps a DLC expansion, or a smaller standalone game?

“We’re focusing on a single-player experience, so we’re just making a single-player game for this,” lead game designer Emilia Schatz told USgamer. A Sony representative double-confirmed this, and all of that came before the tweet above that took multiplayer out of the question.

CGMagazine’s own Brendan Quinn had the chance to see The Last of Us Part II in action earlier this week, and his impressions were positive, reinforcing the notion that this is Naughty Dog’s biggest game ever. We’ll have to wait until February 2020 to see if it really holds up to the hype, but chances are this’ll be Naughty Dog’s best yet.
