Ubisoft Motion Pictures will be developing projects for both the big and small screens.
Ubisoft is apparently moving into the motion picture business. Variety reports that the French publisher is launching Ubisoft Motion Pictures to adapt its franchises for film and TV, adding that the Paris-based studio will be headed by Jean-Julien Baronnet.
While video games don’t have the best history when it comes to Hollywood, Ubisoft has actually had a couple of successes in the past. Last year’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time grossed $335 million worldwide, while 2009’s Assassin’s Creed: Lineage, a live-action short film that served as a prequel to Assassin’s Creed 2, was also fairly well received. Neither was an Iron Man-level success, but they do show that that films based on video games can be good in the right hands.
It’ll be interesting to see how Ubisoft will be handling its properties, but if we ever get an Assassin’s Creed TV series on HBO, I’d definitely be in favor.
