Its cinematic trailer was shown as part of the latest Inside Xbox live stream, which showed off a variety of upcoming games for the Series X. Like a Dragon also presented a dazzling neon-painted Yokohama at night, serving as a fresh playground for new characters. Players become Ichiban Kasuga, a “rock bottom” level member of the titular crime organization framed for a crime he didn’t commit. As he is released from prison 18 years later, he fights new enemies and culture shock in present-day Japan while rebuilding a clan lost long ago. Players also become embroiled in a power struggle within the Tojo Clan as Ichiban struggles to make up for lost time. He fights to regain his status and finds bigger answers behind his betrayal.

Like a Dragon focuses on the core elements of a Yakuza game while expanding its world through the Series X’ capabilities. Its world blooms even more with colourful combat. Enemies feel the impact of fists and weapons as they glow with energy. Its traditional over-the-top minigames and side quests add to its main story to keep players on their toes. This also grants the player experience to build their gang while customizing different skills and classes for stylish fights. Ichiban’s quest also takes him back to former allies, all of which can be recruited for a party to use in missions.

Of course, Yakuza: Like a Dragon doesn’t take itself too seriously. Ichiban gets himself into enough misadventures to show off the series’ sense of humor while adding in some stranger characters through side quests. Its trailer also showed Ichiban finding himself in different situations with other rival gangs all on high alert across the city. Other activities including a SEGA arcade and karaoke take players away from the action whenever they want.

The next major installment of Yakuza is coming with the Series X when it’s released on Holiday 2020. Like a Dragon is also coming to the Xbox One X and PC with special pre-order bonuses. The game also features cross-platform saving between the Series X and Xbox One systems while its Smart Delivery feature lets players upgrade their game to next-generation versions for free.
