Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

I have been keeping a very close eye on the motorola razr fold since I wrote about its announcement in January. I was able to go hands-on briefly at CES 2026 and instantly fell in love. However, I was tentative. I have been hurt before by book-style foldables. Though devices like the Samsung Z Fold7 are finally making their mark as a foldable worth having, first attempts can be scary. Luckily, I have nothing but good things to report about the motorola razr fold, so much so that it will remain my daily driver until the next great smartphone slides into first place.

Obviously, the first thing that caught my attention was the style behind the motorola razr fold. It comes in PANTONE Blackened Blue and PANTONE Lily White, with the black version tested. I can’t say I see anything blue about it, even in the light, but I love how slick it looks with a crosshatch pattern on the back, not to mention it is only 9.9 mm thick. It is the size of my regular single-screen smartphone when folded, only 4.6mm when unfolded, and weighs 243g. The slight upward curve toward the camera looks premium, though it does wobble when lying flat—a common problem with smartphones today.

The outer display on the razr fold almost looks like a curved screen where the bezels meet the picture, but luckily, it appears pretty sturdy. The device was prone to scuffs after a drop from my pocket onto the road, where I normally get at least a few drops before a mark is left behind. Yes, I was devastated; it was the same day my case arrived. I have not healed yet. However, the screen stayed safe and comes with a pre-installed protector that you are warned not to remove.

“What I noticed more than anything was the brilliance in the display’s colours on both screens.”

The motorola razr fold’s display is something that instantly stood out to me while I was getting acquainted with my device. It features a 6.6-inch LTPO pOLED outer display with 2520×1080 resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, and 6000-nit peak brightness. The inner screen is an 8.1-inch LTPO pOLED display with 2484×2232 resolution, a 120Hz variable refresh rate, and 6200 peak brightness. What I noticed more than anything was the brilliance in the display’s colours on both screens, which makes sense thanks to the 10-bit colour depth (over a billion colours).

Internally, the razr fold houses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 mobile chip, not the Elite, so there is some compromise. I haven’t seen any issues come up while using the device, however, including while multitasking or gaming. It also features the Qualcomm Adreno A829 GPU, Android 16, and seven years of updates.

The device features 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM, with an additional 16GB of RAM with RAM Boost. This is at its $1899.99 USD price, where the Z Fold7 with comparable storage is $2119.99 USD (but on sale right now), and it only has 12GB RAM. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is a similar price, at $1919 USD (and also on sale) and does meet the same RAM, just not the same boost. We are finally seeing comparable foldables, with no clear winner in terms of storage, RAM, or cost. Yes, I still think foldables are wildly overpriced, so if you aren’t getting one with a plan, it is a bit insane.

“What really impressed me with the motorola razr fold is the battery.”

What really impressed me with the motorola razr fold is the battery. With a 6000mAh battery, I was regularly heading to bed with more than 30% battery left, even after bingeing TikTok, playing The Elder Scrolls: Castles too much, or taking pictures and videos all day. During a normal workday, with texting, photos, and talking, I would end up around 70%, with the rest to carry me through my doom-scrolling evening. In testing, I only lost about 10% battery in two hours of streaming, with 30 minutes on the outer display and 90 minutes on the inner display at full brightness.

Gaming was also consistently impressive on the motorola razr fold, both in performance and overall battery. Playing for just over an hour, I was getting a solid 60FPS on low settings and then 45FPS on high with textures on high as well. In just over an hour of playing on full brightness on the inner display, the device lost about 14% battery overall. Not bad for the larger-sized screen. I will say Fortnite didn’t look quite as detailed as on my realme GT8 Pro, though it was very vibrant.

Luckily, the razr fold also offers some good charging solutions: 80W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 5W reverse charging. While charging with “TurboPower,” I plugged in at 34%, hit 49% in 10 minutes, and then 58% in another 10 minutes. It wasn’t anything groundbreaking, but I was definitely up and running quick enough. The occasional ad to purchase a motorola 80W charger would pop up when I plugged into something less powerful, which I really didn’t appreciate.

Audio on the motorola razr fold didn’t blow me away, but I rarely use my device as a standalone speaker. I am usually hooked up to something, be it headphones or a speaker itself. It features Dolby Atmos, and the sound is tuned by Bose, but I felt it lacked real depth and power when I would use it. For instance, I tried it while showering and could barely hear it over the water, where I normally can with other devices.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a device in 2026 without baked-in AI features that I personally don’t care about. Moto AI is an app that comes preloaded on the razr fold and offers a few options for anyone looking for help with transcription, note-taking, AI image generation, and even generating playlists based on what you’re looking for with Amazon Music. You also talk to it the same way you would with Gemini or Siri, but some answers were a bit dated, mentioning restaurants that closed 10 years ago.

“The motorola razr fold has a competitive camera array, perhaps the best across the board in a foldable.”

The image generation worked really well, but there is a daily limit, and it resets at 8 p.m. I was able to create in a variety of styles and didn’t see anything too wonky. Magic Eraser on images was pretty good, but struggled slightly to create space where something was unknown, like behind a camera. I was also really happy with the productivity options, like opening up to three apps, selfie mode with the main camera and front display, and even being able to use the razr fold like a tiny laptop.

And with all of that, what we are left with is the camera. The motorola razr fold has a competitive camera array, perhaps the best across the board in a foldable. We are looking at a 50MP wide, telephoto and ultrawide lens, and a 20MP internal selfie camera and external 32MP selfie cam. While Samsung’s foldable does feature a 200MP wide lens, the other cameras fall severely behind at 12MP and under for the other four lenses.

The Pixel Fold Pro is similar, with a 48MP wide lens and the rest under 10.8MP. For anyone who wants to be able to shoot content or even just take photos of their family and selfies for fun, you are far better off with the motorola razr fold.

In practice, I was very happy with the razr fold’s camera performance. Between snapping shots at the Canadian Game Awards, taking selfies, and taking pictures of my kids’ sports, I kept the cameras busy. Catching a moving target is never easy, but the fold was able to take many shots in succession, and even without that still did a pretty great job catching motion. Even some close-ups of the moon were incredibly impressive, albeit during the day.

Occasionally, I would catch the AI assisting in clearing up things far away that would go a bit wonky, but for the most part, I was pleased. Colours were a bit more vibrant than in person, which I personally like, but might be noticed by people a bit pickier.

I would have to say that the motorola razr fold is the most well-rounded book-style foldable right now. Whether you are looking for great battery, excellent cameras, a stylish design and yes, even AI features, the razr fold has it in spades. Even if you are opting for a slightly less-powerful chip, you are making up for it in so many other places, while still sitting in the same price range or less than competitors on the market (even if that price is still crazy).
