Actor Alan Arkin Sadly Dies at 89

Legendary actor Alan Arkin sadly passed away at the age of 89, and he has seen a storied career in film and television that has spanned decades.

The passing of the legendary Alan Arkin was first reported by his sons, Adam, Matthew and Anthony, to PEOPLE, where they said in a joint statement, “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed” regarding their late father. Alan Arkin has been in the film industry for a career that spanned over 50 years, with a 14-minute-long performance in 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine that earned the actor an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Fans have stormed Twitter with an outpouring of support for Alan Arkin, with user TSting18 saying, “He was one of only a handful of actors to receive the Best Actor Oscar nomination for his first movie role, and he just got better from there, he made it look effortless. Alan Arkin was one of the very best” regarding the late actor’s storied tenure.

Fellow Hollywood colleagues have also offered support on Twitter, with Patton Oswalt tweeting, “Did ANYONE have the range Alan Arkin had? Hilarious, sinister, insane, tragic. No mood he couldn’t live in. RIP.” For his Oscar acceptance in 2007, Arkin expressed a heartfelt message “More than anything, I’m deeply moved by the open-hearted appreciation our small film has received, which in these fragmented times speaks so openly of the possibility of innocence, growth, and connection” regarding the smaller Little Miss Sunshine film.

Legendary actor Alan Arkin is survived by his wife of 27 years, Suzanne Newlander, and his four children Adam Arkin, Matthew Arkin, and Anthony Dana Arkin. Arkin’s latest film, The Kominsky Method, can be seen on Netflix, and the film has also seen nominations for multiple awards.
