Today marks the official release of the first teaser trailer for the much talked about Barbie film.

Months after we got the first set photographs of Ryan Gosling rocking a neon-inspired ’80s outfit and Margot Robbie donning a hot pink jumpsuit covered drenched in sequins, the first teaser trailer to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is finally here—and suffice to say, it certainly does sparkle.

The 75-second clip gives away nothing about the plot (we’re not complaining) and instead focuses on the huge impact that barbie had on dolls in a nostalgic parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey. “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls,” a narrator says. “But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until …” Enter our first official glimpse at Robbie in the iconic Barbie black and white striped bathing suit with frilled bangs, and cue the little girls immediately pummelling the faces of their sadder—and less distinguished—baby dolls.

Then we get just a few second glimpses of Gerwig’s rendition of Barbie’s perfect pink plastic world that features a plethora of real-life-size Barbie play structures. More notable is our first look at other characters, including Goslings Ken—wearing a leather fringe vest? Yes, please!—In what looks to be in the middle of an energetic dance number. But wait there’s more, Simu Liu makes a brief appearance wearing all black also in the middle of what appears to be a high-energy dance number, well it’s certainly not going to be boring.

There is a summer 2023 release window for Barbie, the Warner Bros. film. The cast is fronted by Margot Robbie, who also serves as a producer through her LuckyChap label, and this is our finest look at them to date. Greta Gerwig, a celebrated director, is directing the project from a script that she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach.

Tom Ackerly of LuckyChap and Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films, along with Josey McNamara and Ynon Kreiz, are the movie’s producers. Following appearances as everyone’s favourite anti-hero Harley Quinn in the films Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2017), and The Suicide Squad (2021), this will be Robbie’s latest partnership with Warner Bros, with a no less eccentric and iconic character.

Along with Robbie, the cast also includes Ken, played by Ryan Gosling (La La Land) as Ken, America Ferrera (Superstore, Ugly Betty), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Ariana Greenblatt (Love and Monsters), Alexandra Shipp (tick, tick…BOOM!), Emma Mackey (Sex Education), Issa Rae (Insecure), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Hari Nef (Transparent), and Will Ferrell (Spirited) as the CEO of a toy company.

While the plot has yet to be disclosed or even speculated about, there is little doubt that Barbie will be on everyone’s radar in 2023. The trailer has apparently been showing in theatres ahead of Avatar: The Way of the Water, but Greta and her hot pink-drenched dream world won’t drop until July 21, 2023.
