Bioware calls Mass Effect: Andromeda's DLC cancellation a "defining moment" for Anthem's development

Bioware General Manager Casey Hudson has released a statement from the studio regarding recent events and worries surrounding the company’s priorities and the development of its upcoming new IP Anthem.

The update, which was posted to Bioware’s blog addressed worries about whether or not Anthem would be along the lines of the studio’s past games, being a character and story-driven RPG akin to Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Hudson claimed that Mass Effect: Andromeda’s reception and the following cancellation of all story DLC plans was a “defining moment in refocusing BioWare’s mission.”

“We need to delight players with new experiences and innovation, but we must stay focused on the importance of the world, character, and storytelling elements that players expect from our games,” Hudson said. “And our games must be designed to continue delivering new stories and experiences, in an ongoing relationship with players in the worlds we’re evolving together.”

Hudson says that this mission will inform Anthem’s development leading into its launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2019, as well as “games that will follow.” Whether this is in reference to the upcoming Dragon Age sequel or follow-ups to Anthem is currently unknown.

Anthem was given its first proper unveiling a EA Play last year, with a gameplay demo following at Microsoft’s E3 press conference. Initially set to launch in 2018, Anthem was delayed into 2019 back in January. The game will be Bioware’s first new IP in over a decade, a distinction that was originally meant to be carried by Shadow Realms, which was cancelled in 2015.

Representatives of Bioware recently held a panel at HavenCon, where they revealed information about the studio’s budget, as well as claimed the studio might have gone under had it not been for its acquisition by EA.
