Can Gaming Keep You Fit?

Gamers have gotten a bad rap for being lazy, overweight and inactive. Realistically, this is just a stereotype we see in memes and in the media. Plenty of gamers spend their fair amount of time at the gym, and many athletes and extremely fit people spend their spare time playing video games—I’m looking at you Henry Cavil. The real question here is can gaming keep you fit?

Some games themselves are specifically dedicated to keeping you active. There are plenty of work-out games, like Knockout Home Fitness and Ring Fit Adventure for Nintendo Switch. There are also many titles that get you moving in the name of fun, like Just Dance and Nintendo Switch Sports. Virtual Reality (VR) is another amazing way to combine gaming and staying active, with games like Supernatural VR and Beat Saber.

Interestingly enough, you don’t need to play one of these more active titles to burn some serious calories. Betway Online Casino recently did a little experiment surrounding gamers and calories. According to their blog, they “asked 17 gamers to play seven of the most popular video games for 90 minutes at a time, and revealed just how many calories we can expect to burn during our next gaming session, and how this compares to an actual workout.”

So what did they find out?

On average, players burn a maximum of 538 calories. That is equivalent to 75 minutes of mowing the lawn, 42 minutes of jump-rope, or a 90-minute walk according to fitness BLENDER. But let’s look at how many calories were burned by game title:

Betway also kept an eye on a few other key workout stats. Interestingly enough, the games that burned the most calories weren’t necessarily the games that kept players’ heart rates the highest. They even summed up just how many crunches, knee push-ups or squats you’d have to do to equal the calories burned in each game.

Some interesting facts to consider:

  • Fortnite burned the most calories on average
  • Call of Duty: Warzone had the highest average peak (maximum) heart rate
  • Fortnite will keep your heart rate up with an average of 89 BPM
  • Minecraft kept players the calmest

After all that, can gaming keep you fit?

Though I wouldn’t recommend it as your sole source of exercise, it seems like all those days I felt like I did nothing on the couch, I was still burning some calories. Gaming definitely won’t target certain muscle groups—except maybe your thumbs. But it is good to know that 90 minutes of gaming will help me burn off something, even if it’s the equivalent of 4 Twizzlers, 2 tbsp of peanut butter, 2 Double Stuff Oreos, or 15 Lays potato chips.
