Candy Crush is one of those games you either love or hate. Sure, it’s an incredibly successful mobile game. It’s also the bane of your existence on Facebook if your friends keeps on inviting you to play. But, for many players, it’s just another game on the casual market. An addicting one, sure, but something to play on the subway to pass the time. Yet CBS thinks Candy Crush is more than just a time waster. According to a recent press release, they want to turn the franchise into a TV game show.
In a press release published by the TV broadcaster, CBS, announces that Candy Crush will be a “one-hour, live action game show series based on the globally renowned mobile game franchise.” The game will be “created and executive produced by Matt Kunitz,” with CBS, Lionsgate and King working together on the show. In the live action game, “teams of two people use their wits and physical agility to compete on enormous, interactive game boards featuring next-generation technology” to win at Candy Crush.
Of course, if you’re unfamiliar with Candy Crush, it’s a match game and has players switch a variety of candies on a puzzle board to match three or more of the same colour together. The game is infamous, of course, for its life system: Players can request them through friends on Facebook, wait a half-hour for a life to be returned or make an in-game purchase.
CBS seems to be banking on the fact that Candy Crush is incredibly popular among mobile players. Which is true: Candy Crush Saga and Candy Crush Soda Saga are “two of the top 10 grossing mobile games in the US,” as the release states. But just because a game is fun to play now and then doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fun to watch for a full hour. Time will tell if CBS’s show ends up being a hit or a flop.
