It’s been eight years, but Showtime’s Dexter is back to kill again in a 10-episode limited series set to air next year.
The show will be a continuation of the original, eight-season series, reuniting star Michael C. Hall and original showrunner Clyde Phillips. The original 2013 ending left off with the titular serial killer-killer Dexter entering a self-exile, but it appears a reason has been found to bring him back. Presumably, the urge to kill (and maybe reunite with some of the people he used to know) was just too great, but we’ll have to wait and see for details.
“Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago,” said Showtime Entertainment president Gary Levine. “We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world.”
Phillips served as showrunner for the first four seasons of the frequently award-nominated Dexter, leaving in 2009. He signed an overall deal with Showtime and CBS Television Studios earlier this year. Hall, meanwhile, received five straight lead acting Emmy nods for playing Dexter and won Golden Globe and SAG Awards for the role in 2010. His recent appearances include Netflix‘s Safe and The Report. Phillips and Hall will executive produce the Dexter limited series with John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Bill Carraro and Scott Reynolds.
Production for Dexter’s ninth season is scheduled to begin early next year for a planned fall 2021 premiere. I don’t have much experience with the show, but I imagine that a lot of people will be very happy with its return – assuming, of course, that it holds a candle to the original run. We’ll keep you posted for when work on the series starts to ramp up.
