The hit BioWare RPG series shows no signs of slowing down, as during a Netflix presentation today they announced Dragon Age: Absolution, a huge new original series set in the Dragon Age universe.
Netflix has been on a tear with anime and video game-related content the past few years. With critically-acclaimed series such as Castlevania, and not-so-critically-acclaimed series such as Dragon’s Dogma, they’ve been a pretty mixed bag of hit-or-miss content. However, Netflix had another trick up its rather large sleeve: an anime adapted series focusing on the area of Tevinter in the world of Thedas, in Dragon Age: Absolution. The reveal trailer can be seen below.
The BioWare helmed series has been on fire as of late, with the huge announcement of the next game installment Dragon Age: Dreadwolf—also set in Tevinter—recently announced as a follow up to 2014’s Inquisition, which saw positive reviews on Metacritic when released.
With such deep lore and the massive setting Dragon Age is equipped with, this is solid ground for an original series in order to deepen the history of the incredible world that started with Dragon Age: Origins. Although there is a huge amount of background to work with in the world of Tevinter, the trailer functions as more of a teaser and doesn’t reveal much of the plot. An elf (not proven to be Dalish) with facial markings is spotlighted in the trailer, along with a band of adventurers that could be main characters.
It’s worth noting that BioWare has been relatively silent regarding their latest Dragon Age installment until this month where they released a small trailer revealing its subtitle, and the announcement of the new animated series does make it feel as if the series is finally getting its due. Dragon Age: Absolution releases this December on Netflix, setting the stage for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf‘s expected release in late 2023.
