Fable is staying just out of reach once again, as XBOX has pushed the long-awaited reboot back to February 2027.
The wait for the next mainline Fable title has almost made the idea of a new game its own fable. XBOX announced today that the Fable Reboot has been delayed until February 2027, which is the second release date delay in the game’s development history.
The first Fable from 2004 is an RPG classic, first introducing the world to the series’ staples of morality mechanics and British humour. Fable II and III would follow in 2008 and 2010, with some spinoffs here and there as well as Fable Anniversary, a remaster of the first game in 2012.
After the original Fable developer, Lionhead Studios, closed in 2016, the future of the franchise was uncertain until the 2020 Xbox Showcase, where a teaser trailer revealed that a Fable reboot was being developed by Playground Games, which would later announce a 2025 release date.

On the Xbox Podcast in 2025, Head of Xbox Game Studios, Craig Duncan, would reveal that Fable would be delayed until 2026. The reason for that delay was to give the team just a little more time to meet the series’ standards, and that “It’s definitely worth the wait.” Of course, now that wait has been extended even further.
In their announcement post on X today, XBOX noted that this year was already filled with several great XBOX game launches, including Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War: E-Day, as well as the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. XBOX wants to give Fable “the dedicated moment it deserves,” which has led to its new February 2027 release.
We can at least be thankful that the delay didn’t stem from a need for more development time, and that hopefully Fable fans will finally be rewarded for their patience come next February.
