Every year the juggernaut film website IMDb treats cinephiles with the latest and greatest of films of the year, not only that, they give readers a chance to see what’s next.
There are a few guarantees in life: death, taxes, and the certainty that the next year will come. IMDb knows this as well as everyone else, and while the body of their ‘Best of 2021’ list is still warm, the film beast that should be gives readers a look into the following year. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many films have been pushed back in 2021, it’s worth noting some films listed here could see a delay.
IMDb’s Top 10 Anticipated Movies of 2022
The Flash
The DC multiverse technically unlocks with this foray into The Flash, as just like in the comics, he can transcend time and skip into separate timelines.
Although this hero needs no introduction, the introduction of these powers may make the Barry Allen alter ego the most overpowered superhero of all time, it’s still a very exciting standalone film of one of DC Comic’s only look at the red speedster. It is scheduled to race into theatres on November 4th.
Uncharted
Based on the blockbuster game series that came from the veteran game studio Naughty Dog, Uncharted remains one of the most beloved PlayStation game series’ of all time.
With Spider-man‘s Tom Holland playing the Indiana Jones of our time, Nathan Drake, and sporting his signature look, this should be not only loyal to their source material but just a great time in general. With the acting chops of Mark Wahlberg playing mentor figure ‘Sully’, this aims to be an extraordinary ride. Scheduled to delve into theatres on February 18th.
Mission: Impossible 7
Throughout the storied series that is Mission Impossible, Tom Cruise is back for another ride in the franchise’s 7th instalment.
Ethan Hunt returns to the exciting series for what seems to be another tense entry. After many delays, plenty of fan favourites return to the screen in their respective roles. Simon Pegg returns as Benji Dunn, Hayley Atwell returns as Grace, and Rebecca Ferguson returns as Ilsa Faust. The spy ladled team returns to theatres on September 30th.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Returning for the second ‘standalone’ film in the Doctor Strange series of films, the multiverse of madness aims to break all the walls in the MCU to date, after his noteworthy appearance in Spider-man: No Way Home.
With the massive salad that is the MCU, all the heroes band together in one way or another. Doctor Strange faces his largest adversary yet—himself—in a film that aims for the hero to fight insurmountable odds. The Doctor Strange sequel materializes in theatres on May 6th.
Jurassic World: Dominion
This is the third film in the Jurassic timeline, that dropped the park moniker, but not the acting of Jeff Goldblum as returning Ian Malcolm.
This film franchise has been one of serious clout over the years since its inception in 1993, but it also holds a candle in video games, with the newest title being Jurassic World Evolution 2, which is also a sequel. Return to the advanced Mesozoic era in this film on June 10th.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Another film with the Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio has been scheduled to grace the silver screen in the coming year.
Although the film has an unannounced premiere date in 2022, it is a western set in the 1920s, rife with crime and murder. Leo plays a corrupt villain, while Jesse Plemons plays the role of an FBI agent while the Bureau was in its infancy. With his film, Don’t Look Up from 2021 under his belt, and looking to take on the role of cult leader Jim Jones, DiCaprio has been very active and this is a can’t miss.
Top Gun: Maverick
Another Tom Cruise helmed film slated for the 2022 release window, and another sequel on this list is the fighter pilot drama Top Gun’s sequel titled after the character Maverick.
Although the film has been pushed up from the very patriotic July 4th, the movie still aims to be as Top Gun as possible. Cruise is known for bringing serious intensity to his films, and hopefully some of his actions off-screen will translate into the new, beloved Top Gun sequel. Landing in theatres on May 22nd.
Thor: Love and Thunder
What is a film list without superhero movies? Divinely entering at #4 is the 4th movie in the Thor franchise of the MCU.
The film takes place after the events of Thor: Ragnarok, which sees the return of the original movie’s Jane Foster played by Natalie Portman. This film sees the god of thunder’s mantle change hands from the Chris Hemsworth Thor unto Jane Foster. With the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher being thrown into the mix, this aims to be a godly ride. Striking into theatres on July 8th.
Scream
The survivors of the original Scream are back in the 5th instalment of the horror movie franchise that features Ghostface.
With Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell returning to the small terrorized town in California, this aims to be a screamer of a movie for fans of the longstanding franchise. This screaming good time stabs theatres on January 14th.
The Batman
Landing at #1 on the IMDb anticipated movie list is the Dark Knight himself, played by Robert Pattinson, The Batman.
The Batman takes place early in the career of the Dark Knight, while he is still green in the vigilante game of fighting crime without a badge. With Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as L.t. James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as Penguin. The film takes place during Batman’s second year fighting against the worst Gotham City has to offer. One of the latest trailers saw an overly violent Batman beating criminals, what he does best, with angst and a certain unhinged personality. Enter Knight on March 4th.

While most of the films on the list are sequels, it truly makes for a more anticipating experience to see beloved characters return to the screen.
