Developer 4A Games has officially announced Metro 2039, the fourth entry in the post-apocalyptic shooter series based on the book franchise of the same name. You can watch the reveal trailer below.
This new entry takes the action back to the dark and claustrophobic metro tunnels underneath Russia, and the studio is being extremely open about how much Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has altered both life for the 4A Games (based in Ukraine) and the game itself.
In a pre-brief for Metro 2039, attended by multiple outlets such as VGC, 4A Games detailed a bit of the ethos behind the new entry. The series has never shied away from tackling extremely tough and prescient topics before, and that certainly doesn’t look like it’s going to change.
“The meaning [of our games] has always been about preventing war, but now, war is our reality, and our message has shifted to be about the consequences,” said 4A Games.
“Everything we had planned for the next chapter of Metro changed in 2020, and more significantly in 2022.”
While the previous three games focused on a single protagonist named Artyom, it looks like Metro 2039 will introduce a brand new hero simply known as The Stranger. Unlike Artyom, however, The Stranger will be completely voiced, an intentional step to try and increase the immersion on the series’ atmospheric storytelling.
Here’s the official synopsis of the game,
“The year is 2039. For a quarter century, the last survivors of nuclear war have been locked in bitter conflict deep in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city of Moscow. Now, finally, they have been united by a single leader, a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter.
But this is no peace: Hunter’s Novoreich regime rules through propaganda and fear, subjugating the population in the name of a new war for the surface against a dark and terrifying enemy. In the wilderness beyond the city, the reclusive Stranger is haunted by violent waking nightmares.
When the ghosts of his past force him out of exile, he must undertake a harrowing journey into the shattered ruins of Moscow, to the one place he swore he’d never go. The Metro.”
Metro 2039 launches Winter 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
