Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 just introduced their new accessibility options for many players who are currently using it.
Accessibility features in video games have been a more frequent, growing issue for many gamers. The Call of Duty staff just announced there will be a Modern Warfare 3 update that will primarily introduce various accessibility options. The changes will mostly impact the settings menu, including controller customization and graphical adjustments to improve the game’s accessibility. The Call of Duty team was surprised to discover that a substantial amount of Modern Warfare 2 and MW3 players use specific accessibility features.
New Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Accessibility Features:
Deadzone Input Tweaks
One of the most interesting findings was that over 40% of players customized deadzone inputs in Modern Warfare 2. Visual representation of the changes made in the settings preview menu before saving them to global settings has been improved. This would essentially provide more feedback for players looking to specifically tweak their experience.
Deadzone input tweaks are detrimental to Call of Duty fans, more so for those in the community with motor disabilities. Having the ability to pinpoint how much motor effort and control they have was something the team considered. This really helps gamers with limitations in hand movement to have more options for a comfortable experience—that also keeps them competitive in-game. This is definitely something all FPS/shooting game devs should consider in their games.
High Contrast Mode
In high contrast mode, players will be beneficial for those with vision impairment or colour
blindness to see their allies and enemies more clearly. It also outlines allies in blue-green and enemies in red and adjusts in real time. The Call of Duty staff found that more than half of players in Modern Warfare 2 customized graphical accessibility settings such as Motion Blur, Field of View, or Camera Movement. Modern Warfare 3 was said to have even more options to enhance the visual experience. For now, high contrast mode is only available in campaign mode.
Low Motor Strain Preset
Modern Warfare 3 will introduce a new accessibility setting called Low Motor Strain. This setting aims to minimize the physical exertion needed while playing the game. Essentially, this means that this preset will offer fewer button presses or holds, and the sensitivity is increased. Not much else was detailed, but I can imagine this would be super helpful for gamers whose motor skills are quite cumbersome when using regular controls.
It is great to see Modern Warfare 3 and other games adding more accessibility options. Check out the Call of Duty website for additional details.
