An official fan-made Portal 2 free-quel is on the way, and it will be made available on the Steam storefront, showing Valve has given the prequel the green light.

Portal 2 was released to near-universal acclaim back in 2011. With a focus on hilarious robot-laden jokes and clever puzzle-solving, the sequel built on everything that made the original great. Today, a fan mod project that has been developing since has received a new trailer, a release date, and an official listing on the Valve Steam storefront. The trailer can be seen below.

Portal: Revolution takes place between the events of Portal and Portal 2, after the demise of GLaDOS, and tasks the player with returning the Aperture facility to its former glory. The trailer shows new game mechanics that will feel familiar, yet different to longtime fans of the series, and Developer/Publisher Second Face Software developer Stefan Heinz has slowly updated fans on progress since the mod went into development on the forum ModDB.

From the inside perspective, Heinz has given development details such as how the title will play more like the original Portal than Portal 2 and how “It takes way more time to create story scenes than the average chamber” in Portal: Revolution. The Portal: Revolution mod title seeks to bridge the gap between the previous two titles, and picks up right where the original left off, in a decaying Aperture facility.

The prequel is set to include “40 brand new puzzles making use of new test elements and presents existing mechanics in a new way not seen in Portal 2” and will consist of a storyline introducing new characters such as the new companion called ‘Stirling’ that is definitely more spherical than the predecessor companion cube.

Portal: Revolution will be available for users who own Portal 2 on the Steam platform for FREE; otherwise fans who wish to jump into the action have to purchase the title prior to being able to play the prequel story. Fans can see the official Steam listing directly from Valve, as Portal: Revolution is set to launch on January 5, 2024.
