SDCC 2020 Cancelled From COVID-19 Pandemic, 2021 Convention Planned

One of pop-culture’s biggest conventions isn’t happening this year in San Diego as the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic continues to keep fans at home.

In a statement from organizers, Comic-Con is coming back next July while it’s the first cancellation in the event’s 50-year run. The event had also monitored safety levels in hopes of coronavirus lessening by the summer. Unfortunately, current conditions forced organizers to pull SDCC from scheduling.

“Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year,” wrote organizers, adding its WonderCon Anaheim event was also cancelled in April with hopes to return in March 2021.

The organization had also planned renovations for a Comic-Con Museum dedicated to the event’s history while its grand opening is delayed to next summer. The date isn’t solid however, as the pandemic is also expected to slow construction times.

Anyone with a ticket or scheduled lineup is also entitled to a refund or a next badge for SDCC 2021. Organizers also stated an email would come with instructions shortly next week. All related hotel reservations will also be canceled, with charges being refunded to guests.

So far, the next SDCC is being set for July 22-25, 2021 at the San Diego Convention Center.
