SNK Announces Samurai Shodown V Special at EVO 2017

Samurai Showdown V will be making a return on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

At EVO (Evolution Championship Series) 2017, an annual series of fighting game tournaments, SNK and Code Mystics announced that Samurai Shodown V Special will launch this summer. Samurai Shodown V Special promises to be a proper release of the 2003 fighting game, featuring all the elements found in its original arcade release. SNK is working with Code Mystics to bring new features to the title, such as online multiplayer, gallery modes with unlockable art and PlayStation trophy support. SNK also confirmed that Samurai Shodown V Special will be playable at EVO 2017 from July 14 to July 16.

Known as Samurai Spirits Zero in Japan, Samurai Shodown V is the eighth game in SNK’s long-running Samurai Shodown series. It was also one of the last games to be released on the Neo Geo. Developed as a prequel to the first Samurai Shodown; the game featured one of the largest rosters in the series.

Due to localisation decisions, Samurai Shodown V faced negative reaction when it was originally released in the west. The original Japanese version had a great deal of dialogue in its single player campaign. When playing the American version in English, the scenes containing dialogue were removed completely. The console versions of Samurai Shodown V also censored much of the violence and gore found in the in the arcade original and contained critical bugs in its gameplay. Samurai Shodown V was available on Xbox in the west while the PlayStation 2 and digital PlayStation 3 versions remained Japan exclusives.

EVO is currently planned for this weekend and is being held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many of the best fighting game players around the globe come together at this event to take part in tournaments of the most popular fighting games in the world. Some of the game’s being featured this year are Street Fighter V, Tekken 7 and Injustice 2.

Shodown V Special will be available sometime this summer on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.
