Sonic Frontiers Shows Off Seven Minutes of 'Open-Zone' Gameplay in Deep Dive

Sega has officially debuted its first gameplay look for its upcoming ‘open-zone’ game, Sonic Frontiers.

While the game looks inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with a lush green landscape for players to explore, the developer, Sonic Team, has seemingly made strides to make it its own game.

Sonic Frontiers was officially announced during this past Game Awards ceremony following leaks of the game’s at the time rumoured title and platforms. Sonic finds himself on Starfall Islands, a mysterious set of islands that feature environments including flowery fields, forests, ancient ruins, and deserts. The initial announcement only featured cinematics, so the look at gameplay via IGN First is an actual first look at gameplay with the Sonic fans know from past games running at high speed both horizontally and vertically, collecting coins, grinding on rails, homing attacks, and more.

Not much is known as far as plot details as Sonic is the only character we know has been showcased, but the blue hedgehog is seen battling robots in the game which could hint at Dr. Robotnik’s involvement in the game. Although, it could be another antagonist force as the robots in question feel a little different from Eggman’s style of robots. They have a more ancient flare to them, kind of like the Guardians in Breath of the Wild.

While Sonic Team’s inspirations can be easily felt, they have put their own Sonic Spin Dash on the idea in Sonic Frontiers with gameplay mechanics from past games. A couple of those include the dash pads, grinds, and homing attacks from the beloved Sonic Adventure games but also the boost and mid-air trick in Sonic Generations. Following the kick-off of Sonic‘s 30th anniversary, Sonic Frontiers so far looks like a celebration of the franchise’s past in 3D space with modern Sonic.

At the same time, the game also gives fans a possible glimpse at the future of 3D Sonic games which have been mostly linear. Sonic Frontiers is a paradigm shift to that idea with the open-world aspects of the game. Hopefully, Sega shows off more of the game, so fans can get a better idea of the game’s plot and most importantly when exactly Sonic Frontiers is coming out.

Sega hasn’t announced an official release date for Sonic Frontiers but for now, it is slated to release this fall on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
