Sakurai Bids Farewell to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as Last Amiibo Fighter Hits Shelves

Masahiro Sakurai Says "Thank You To Everyone" After Final Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo Launches

The creator of the massively successful Super Smash Bros. franchise, Masahiro Sakurai, considers his work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate “basically finished” after the last fighter has been released as an amiibo.

It’s been a long time since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched way back in 2018. Since then, Nintendo has introduced a different Nintendo-branded toys-to-life kind of product called amiibo. These little figures were shaped into the characters as they appear on the trophy table in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With the promise every character on the title’s roster will be turned into an amiibo, the last fighter Sora has been released today. Masahiro Sakurai has made a post on X (formerly Twitter) to thank everyone, and to commemorate the release and it can be seen below.

Masahiro Sakurai said (thanks to Google Translate) “Sora amiibo released today! Thank you very much to everyone involved. (I think it’s amazing)” including a kind of sad farewell, saying “Now that all the fighters have been made into amiibo, I guess my work on Smash Bros. Ultimate is finally coming to an end. Thank you for everything.”

Masahiro Sakurai is the original creator of the Super Smash Bros. that was released on the Nintendo 64 back in 1999 and has served as the director of the franchise since. In 1999, there were only 12 characters: Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Jigglypuff, Ness, Captain Falcon and Pikachu.

Fast forwarding to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there are a staggering 89 characters on the final roster, turned into fully functioning toys in-game. What initially turned from a dream of a four-player fighting game to a massive franchise, is a huge accomplishment. Nintendo is also holding a tournament starting on March 1st, (with the help of Google Translate) there will be a type of special event where combatants can enter their amiibo fighter in a tag tournament. Details are currently limited to the one post above so far from the official Nintendo Japan X account, so fans interested should follow the Nintendo Events page for more information as it arrives.
