The Witcher Is Getting An Animated Netflix Film

| January 25, 2020

Netflix is jumping on the success of the Henry Cavill-led live-action adaptation of The Witcher by announcing that an animated film is on the way from Studio Mir.

Studio Mir has worked with Netflix in the past on things like Voltron: Legendary Defender, but they are best known for their work on the hit Nickelodeon show The Legend of Korra. The Witcher film, subtitled Nightmare of the Wolf, will reportedly explore “a powerful new threat facing Continent.” The film comes from The Witcher producers, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Beau DeMayo, who according to Hissrich, have been working with Studio Mir on the anime for more than a year, suggesting that Netflix was planning to expand its Witcher franchise for some time now.

The Witcher was originally a gritty, high fantasy book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, and was adapted into a wildly popular video game series by the now-famous developer CD Projekt Red. A couple years back, it was announced that Netflix would be making a live-action series featuring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Riviera, star of the games and frequent crossover participant. The show has proven successful enough to drive more sales of the already popular video games, so chances are good we’ll see more of it in the future.

While I’m not up to date on Korra and I haven’t watched Voltron, I’m a big fan of Korra’s predecessor Avatar: The Last Airbender, so I have faith in Studio Mir’s animation abilities. It might be too much to ask for writing that will hold a candle to the Witcher’s typical standard, but I’m still excited for more of the franchise all the same. Check back in the future for more news on the cast and when The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will release.
