Not Your Father's Clippy

Xbox has been linked to exciting AI developments, and although they overhauled their search engine with AI optimization last year, they’re working on an Xbox AI Chatbot this year, but not for the reasons customers may think.

Microsoft has gone all in on AI and AI advancements over the past year, and consumers may be wondering what exactly is on the horizon for big Xbox AI. Consumers finally have an answer. In a recent statement to The Verge, Microsoft has let the cat out of the bag regarding its latest AI developments, and it has been confirmed that Microsoft is currently testing a new AI-powered Xbox chatbot that can be used to automate support tasks. According to the report, Microsoft said of the new Xbox AI chatbot: “This agent can help you with your Xbox support questions.

The Xbox Ai Chatbot Does Basic Support Functions

General Manager of Gaming AI at Xbox, Haiyan Zhang said, “We are testing an Xbox Support Virtual Agent, an internal prototype of an animated character that can query Xbox Support topics with voice or text,” including, “The prototype makes it easier and quicker for players to get help with support topics using natural language, taking information from existing Xbox Support pages” regarding the new Xbox AI Chatbot. It seems the Chatbot is an Xbox version of Microsoft Office’s Clippy mascot, an entity designed to help users navigate Xbox similar to how Clippy provided navigation to users in Microsoft Office.

Of course, this raises another question. Microsoft laid off 1,900 (or 9%) of its gaming workforce in January 2024 following the massive Blizzard Activision acquisition. This new Xbox AI Chatbot revelation could be negatively taken considering the blow from the massive layoffs earlier in the year is still felt, on this topic, Microsoft has not made any comment. Regarding a potential release date, Microsoft has stayed quiet on that front, so fans will have to stay tuned for further news regarding the Xbox AI support chatbot.
