Xiaomi Takes Aim At Samsung With Launch Of Thinner Mix Fold 3 Foldable

Almost Paper Thin

Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 Launch Today, Could Be Thinnest Design Yet 1

Xiaomi just launched their latest foldable phone, the Mix Fold 3, along with Redmi K60 Ultra, Xiaomi Pad 6 Max and Xiaomi Band 8 Pro in China.

Coming hot off the heels of the release of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, Xiaomi just launched their latest third-generation foldable phone: the Mix Fold 3. While it will only be available in China, it is currently available for pre-order as of today (August 14). Today also saw the launch of the Redmi K60 Ultra, Xiaomi Pad 6 Max and Xiaomi Band 8 Pro.

The company will launch the Redmi K60 Ultra soon in the global markets under the Xiaomi 13T Pro moniker. Xiaomi will also launch Band 8 Pro in the global market. There is no information about the global launch of the Mix Fold 3 and Pad 6 Max, which will likely be limited to the Chinese markets. Several improvements have been made from the Mix Fold 3’s previous model, besides improving upon the competition’s pain points. One of the highlighted points was thinness.

The Mix Fold 3 is just 4.93mm thick, and in the folded form, it measures about 9.8mm, super thin! This would topple the current thinnest foldable phone, the Honor Magic V2. Also, this would put itself in contention against the Razer+, Pixel Fold, Vivo X Fold 2, Galaxy Z Flip and OnePlus Open.

Xiaomi has equipped the Mix Fold 3 with an 8.03-inch foldable E6 AMOLED LTPO display with a 2K resolution. The foldable device has a secondary 6.56-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The phone company uses ultra-thin flexible glass for the inner display, which is 2.25 times stronger. This means it can withstand over 5,00,000 folds as per TÜV Rheinland certification! The display gets Corning Gorilla Victus 2 protection for the outer and UTG protection for the inner display.

Another notable addition is its 50W wireless charging alongside the original 67W wired option. Depending on your charging method, the company says it takes 55 minutes or 40 minutes to fully charge the slightly denser 4,800mAh battery. The Mix Fold 3 runs off Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 “Leading Version” processor, with its primary core capable of up to 3.36GHz of clock speed—handy for video editing or gaming on the larger screen.

And for the photography enthusiasts like myself, Xiaomi has outfitted the Mix Fold 3 with an insane Leica-tuned quad-rear-camera setup that comes with a 50-megapixel f/1.77 main camera (Sony IMX800, 23mm equivalent) with optical stabilization, a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide camera (15mm equivalent), a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (75mm equivalent) and the handy new 10-megapixel f/2.92 periscope camera (115mm equivalent).

As for the front camera, it has a 20-megapixel front cameras on both the 6.56-inch external screen (2,520 x 1,080, 120Hz) and 8.025-inch flexible screen (2,160 x 1,916, 120Hz). This is more for video calls or meetings when you cannot toggle the external screen using the rear cameras for better selfies.

Xiaomi has launched the Mix Fold 3 in Moon Shadow Black and Xingyao Gold colour options. The company has priced the various models ranging from 8,999 yuan or about $1,240 (12GB LPDDR5X with 256GB UFS 4.0 storage) to 10,999 yuan or around $1,515 (16GB RAM and 1TB storage). Following last year, all versions include a familiar-looking kickstand back cover in the box, but now with a bonus protection frame for the upper part of your foldable.

While this may be the thinnest foldable phone on the market, its downside is that it will only be available in Chinese markets. So, Samsung and Honor can rest assured their global markets will not take as big a hit. But, it is also a wake-up sign, signalling how they can improve their foldable flagships.
