PlayStation has opened the floodgates for God of War Laufey pre-orders today, including the limited Collector’s Box, but it doesn’t include a copy of the game.
It appears Collector’s Editions of games continue to leave out the most important part of the package. God of War Laufey is beelining for its release, and today, PlayStation announced that the next chapter in the Norse GoW saga is up for pre-order. This includes a limited edition Collector’s Box, which, like all other Collector’s Edition releases, contains physical goods based on the game’s universe that you can tangibly hold or decorate your house with. Although all of the added bells and whistles add to the purchase, in recent years, Collector’s Edition releases have started leaving out the most important part of the package: a copy of the game itself.
God of War: Ragnarok also had a Collector’s Edition (and a further upgraded Jotnar Edition) option on release, which contained numerous goods including a replica of Thor’s Hammer, Mjolnir. Back then, the two collector editions of the game launched with a code-in-box instead of a physical disc, and fans were not happy. Fans blasted the decision on forums like Reddit, saying the inclusion of a steelbook case was misleading, and it’s foolish to put an empty case on a shelf. With God of War Laufey‘s Collector Box, they did not include a physical disc or a game code (or a steelbook), meaning this purchase does not have a copy of the game with it.
Recently, Rockstar Games also dropped a Collector Box for GTA VI called The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, retailing for $399.99. In bold print on the site, Rockstar states, “Note: Grand Theft Auto VI game sold separately,” meaning this big purchase is steeped in GTA VI merch that you might see in the game, without the game. God of War Laufey is following GTA VI rather than its predecessor, and dropping the game code from the box; no disc will be included with the purchase either.
God of War Laufey’s Collector Box includes a nifty light-up statue depicting Faye, a 51-card Oracle deck, and a mini-artbook. The whole package will run fans £129.99, as it is appearing on the UK site, and the Collector Box drops on the same day as the game, on February 16, 2027. Fans interested can pre-order straight from the PlayStation website.
