Gran Turismo Movie In The Works at Sony, Set To Release 2023

Gran Turismo Movie Announced by Sony, Set To Release 2023

Sony has confirmed a Gran Turismo movie is in the works and is set to release in August 2023.

While one of the odder properties to make its way to the screen, it seems there are plenty on board to make it happen—including director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), and writer Jason Hall, who had previously penned American Sniper. Gran Turismo fans might be used to waiting for releases in the racing series as this upcoming film actually won’t see its premiere until summer 2023.

In a report by Deadline, the movie is based on a true story. It will tell the tale of a Gran Turismo player who gets a shot at becoming an actual professional race car driver. After winning a Nissan competition, the gaming skills give them a chance to finally live their dream.

With their most recent endeavour, Uncharted, earning an opening of $44 million with a total box office of $400.8 million worldwide, it is no wonder Sony is looking to bank in on some of their IPs. While the previously reported The Last of Us series for HBO is currently in development, Sony has also announced Twisted Metal at Peacock, God of War for Prime Video and a Ghost of Tsushima movie is in the pipeline to keep things interesting.

This is just one more game making its way to the screen, with Dragon Age, and Castlevania: Nocturne both receiving a new series over at Netflix. This is after the smash hit Netflix saw with Arcane, the previous Castlevania, Dota: Dragon’s Blood, and Dragons Dogma all filling out the animation ranks on the service.

While Gran Turismo may be a strange choice to start the next wave of films with, it is surprising it has taken this long to give into the back catalogue for new film and TV ideas. With the Halo series doing well for Microsoft, and games now one of the biggest industries in entertainment, you can be sure this is not the last gaming-based media announcement for 2022.
