As the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film has been out for almost a year, it has been confirmed to be the sixth highest-grossing anime film of all time.
Jujutsu Kaisen was a hit popular anime show that gripped fans immediately, debuting back in October 2020. With the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 almost being released in Japan a year ago, Toho provided an update on where the film stood at the worldwide box office. Additionally, while the film has been currently streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide, it will also be headed to Prime Video in Japan on December 24.
Internationally, the prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released in 89 countries and regions, with a gross of 12.7 yen ($91.55 million USD), and 10.67 million tickets sold. With the Japanese box office gross of 13.8 billion yen ($121.15 USD), the worldwide gross totalled 26.5 billion yen ($196.17 million USD).
The highest grossing film of the year in Japan was the recently released One Piece FIlm: Red at 18.39 billion yen, and $180.6 million USD. worldwide. But, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was announced to claim the titles of 15th highest-grossing film of all time in the country, as well as the 9th highest grossing anime film. On the international scale, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was the 6th highest grossing anime film of all time, pushing Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You down to 7th place and the 4th highest-grossing Japanese film in the United States.
These were some amazing insights on how anime films have drastically grown in Japan, and worldwide. In spite of the pandemic, sources like The Hollywood Reporter have noted how anime fans increased while quarantine and lockdowns occurred. It has become evident that the medium has been reaching more audiences, with even more critical acclaim. To bolster that greater reach, Crunchyroll merged with Funimation this year to create a mega library of anime shows and films.
The Jujutsu Kaisen TV anime simulcasted its episodes on Crunchyroll at the same time as in Japan, with the English dub being released shortly after. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released on March 18, along with screenings in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and select European countries, from March to April. The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen will be premiering in 2023, as the original studio MAPPA (Chainsaw Man) announced their return to helm the season, but no confirmed release date has been set yet.
