MultiVersus Is Officially Launching on May 28 With Updates 1

A new video from the MultiVersus game director revealed it would be launching on May 28 with Unreal Engine 5 and many more updates.

It seems like a while since I have heard about the status of MultiVersus, other than the recent McDonald’s toy collab. Warner Bros. Games and Player First Games dropped a new video today, officially revealing the launch of MultiVersus and its new features. The game will finally be coming out on May 28th, and game director Tony Huynh explained that previous criticisms had been taken into account to make the game better than it was in its beta sessions.

“The team has heard your feedback and learned a lot from our open beta,” Huynh said. “Here at Player First Games, it’s always been our aspiration to make a platform fighter that you’ll love as much as we do. We’ve been working hard on a variety of changes and updates to deliver an improved gameplay experience.”

Huynh continued to expand in the video that the changes included “some really exciting brand new personalities to the roster,” new stages, improved netcode and new moves for each character. One commenter pointed out that Harley Quinn had a new dash move. The game has also upgraded to using Unreal Engine 5, and a new PvE mode will be introduced “with unique rewards.”

Multiversus Is Officially Launching On May 28 With Updates 2

MultiVersus initially launched as an open beta in July 2022 as a Super Smash Bros.-style crossover fighting game featuring characters from a variety of Warner Bros. properties. It included characters from many universes, like DC Comics, Looney Tunes, Cartoon Network, Game of Thrones, Tom & Jerry, Gremlins, Rick & Morty and The Iron Giant.

The game was popular on its open beta launch, peaking at around 143,000 players on Steam on day one and rising to 153,433 the following day. A month after its launch, WB Games claimed that over 20 million players had already downloaded and played MultiVersus, suggesting they had good traction for the game.

However, the player count dipped significantly by February 2023, when it dipped below 1,000 players for the first time. This amounted to a drop in daily peak player count of 99.4% in less than seven months. The drop in players was said to have been due to the lack of content in its second season. It could have also been due to the fact that the highly-anticipated Hogwarts Legacy game came out that month, too. So, technically WB Games was competing with themselves at that point!
