The new Tomb Raider series over at Amazon has yet to even get off the ground, but Phoebe Waller-Bridge spilled some new info on the upcoming series.

The Writer’s Guild of America strike has stifled almost all production in Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean information stops spreading. The new Amazon Tomb Raider series has tagged Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a showrunner, and seeing her journey from Fleabag to the latest Indiana Jones film, Tomb Raider just seems like a natural progression. At least that was the message given in the latest interview by Vanity Fair, featuring Waller-Bridge, and she didn’t hold back while revealing some information regarding the upcoming series.

The most recent Tomb Raider film from 2018 was a reboot of sorts, and it starred Alicia Vikander as a young and inexperienced Lara Croft. Waller-Bridge told Vanity Fair, “She had an attitude. She was very deliberate in what she wanted to do” and expressed annoyance at her adjustment to being marketed as “a sex symbol.”

Waller-Bridge goes on to mention, “There’s room to do something really quite dangerous. And if I can do something dangerous and exciting with Tomb Raider, I already have an audience of people who love Lara and hopefully will continue to. And that is a very unusual position to be in” on her insistence on remaining faithful to the attitude-laden portrayal of the archaeologist of the 90s. Phoebe Waller-Bridge insisted the new Amazon series has a chance to “do right by Lara” and recreate some of that magic from the earlier incarnations of the series.

Waller-Bridge then said, “What if I could take the reins on an action franchise, with everything I’ve learned, with a character I adore, and also just bring back some of that ’90s vibe?” on her vision for the new Tomb Raider.

While almost nothing has been revealed about the new Amazon series, it seems to be in a good place with a showrunner that seeks to do right by the iconic character and series. Fans can swing over to Vanity Fair for the whole interview.
