Yesterday afternoon, Actress Olivia Munn took to Instagram to reveal her struggle fighting against breast cancer to spread support and inspiration for others suffering from the same affliction.
Olivia Munn has been in the limelight since appearing as co-host with Kevin Pereira on G4TV’s Attack of the Show! Today she is in the news for a whole different reason, an Instagram post that Munn had posted yesterday had a revelation in it that provides an update on the actress’s health. The Instagram post caption reads “I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I hope by sharing this it will help others find comfort, inspiration and support on their own journey.” Munn had shared her experience with the diagnosis, detailing some of her struggles going through the process of discovery also on Instagram.
Olivia Munn explains “In February of 2023, in an effort to be proactive about my health, I took a genetic test that checks you for 90 different cancer genes. I tested negative for all, including BRCA (the most well-known breast cancer gene). My sister Sara had just tested negative as well.” Munn then says “Two months later I was diagnosed with breast cancer.” Munn also shared the news on her sister, which could also be important for those going through genetic testing of this kind, it shows the genetic testing is still important even if your blood-related sister does the same test.
Olivia Munn then explained she would not have found her cancer if not for the vigilance of her doctor, OBGYN Dr. Thais Aliabadi, who decided to calculate her Breast Cancer risk assessment score. Munn contends “The fact that she did saved my life.” After more tests, the doctors discovered she had Luminal B cancer in both breasts, which she then elected to get a double mastectomy for. Munn says “I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next” regarding the harrowing nature of her illness.
All-in-all, Olivia Munn has shared her story in hopes that it could inspire or support others in need during a difficult diagnosis. She encourages women to ask their doctor to calculate their Breast Cancer Risk Assessment score annually, and schedule annual mammograms to stay on top of potential health scares.
