Not to be confused with the video game series, The Midnight Club, a Netflix horror series, has gotten the axe.
Despite ‘generally favorable’ reviews overall from Metacritic, the horror series at Netflix has been put to rest after the first season. The leading production company, Intrepid Pictures, was founded in 2004 and are responsible for other popular Netflix horror shows The Haunting of Hill House, and Bly Manor. The reason for the cancellation is most likely related to the recent news showrunners Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy inking a new exclusivity deal with Amazon Studios, as Deadline reports just today.
Head of Global Television at Amazon Studios, Vernon Sanders said, “Mike and Trevor are remarkable at telling immersive, suspenseful stories that masterfully keep audiences engaged from start to finish,” with “We are excited to welcome them to Amazon Studios and are looking forward to our global customers experiencing their genre-bending creativity,” regarding the Intrepid Pictures deal acquisition.
Keeping with their signature brand of faithfully adapting novels, The Midnight Club is based on a book by Christopher Pike, and the 10-episode season provides a look into the minds of terminally ill teenagers who meet to tell scary campfire-branded stories which take the viewer on a trip down many different frightening scenarios loaded with jump scares.
Intrepid Pictures’ Flanagan and Macy said, “Amazon is a studio that we have long admired,” with “Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid. We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe,” regarding the new relationship with The Midnight Club showrunners.
The Midnight Club remains a Netflix exclusive, however, so horror fans will need to go to the streaming service to watch the series. Flanagan did tease he would reveal the show’s many mysteries via Twitter if the show does not go into season two, so hopefully, we can all look forward to that at some point.
