The First Resident Evil Teaser Has Dropped, Spawning New Terror

After taking over the minds of horror fans everywhere with Weapons last year, Zach Cregger’s next project, a new Resident Evil, has finally been nudged into the light with a new teaser.

The new Resident Evil film helmed by Zach Cregger has just come full circle. Last year at CinemaCon, it was revealed that the director of Barbarian and Weapons would be channelling his horror chops into Capcom’s zombie-filled hellscape with a new film. This year at CinemaCon, Sony has produced a teaser for the new film showcasing Cregger’s take on the series. The film follows Bryan (played by Austin Abrams, who starred in Weapons), a medical courier trying to deliver to Raccoon City, only to find himself caught up in a night of terror. The trailer can be seen below, courtesy of Sony.

Last year at CinemaCon, Cregger labelled himself a Resident Evil fan, and said he would like to channel the identity of the games in his new film. Cregger explained, “There’s a moment that comes in almost every Resident Evil game where you find yourself in a dark passageway, your health is almost zero, and there’s no way around,” continuing with “That is a thrill that the Resident Evil games have perfected.” Cregger touts his new film “will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”

Cregger says the upcoming film will be “unlike any of the previous films” in the franchise, and it may already appear so at the outset. Instead of following a heroic, superpowered former Umbrella security officer (as in the Paul W.S. Anderson-directed films starring Milla Jovovich), the Cregger film follows what appears to be a regular guy on a regular delivery in the not-so-regular location of Raccoon City, overrun by zombies. Cregger promises fans, “If you love the games, you will feel their influence everywhere in the movie.”

Zach Cregger’s new take on Resident Evil will be landing in theatres on September 18.
