New Studio, Giant Skull, Formed by Star Wars Jedi Director & Former Respawn Devs

Game Director Stig Asmussen, responsible for some memorable single-player experiences with God of War III and Star Wars Jedi, has revealed Giant Skull, his new studio with former Respawn Entertainment devs.

In a surprising announcement, the former game director for Respawn Entertainment, Stig Asmussen, has revealed his new AAA single-player game development studio today. It is called Giant Skull, and while it also employs former Respawn Entertainment developers, it is solely focused on the single-player gaming experience. Asmussen has experience in this field, considering he has worked on God of War III and the Star Wars Jedi franchise for years.

Giant Skull is described as “dedicated to building gameplay-driven, story-immersed action-adventure games set in captivating worlds.” Its first project described as an “AAA single-player-focused action-adventure,” built in Unreal Engine 5. Asmussen told IGN, “We want our players to have a certain degree of autonomy and ownership in the game and agency as they’re playing it. We want to make a game that has a momentum to it that you want to keep on playing it. And we respect our players. We wanna create real authentic worlds that don’t feel random; they feel like there’s a rich history. And [that] there’s thought behind them” on the studio’s direction.

Anthony Scott, COO and CFO of Giant Skull, formerly director of operations at Rocksteady Studios, says “we’re creating something special and have been fortunate enough to assemble an incredible initial team of developers who are extremely passionate and experienced in creating genre-defining, third-person action-adventures.”

The new studio employs many veteran game developers from Riot Games, Epic and Rocksteady Studios, including: Jon Carr, technical director on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor; Patrick Murphy, an art director on Fortnite; Lauren McLemore, a lead producer on Fortnite; Jeff Magers, design director on the Star Wars Jedi games; and Brian Campbell, a former animation director at Epic Games. While not much else has been revealed regarding the studio, fans can check out the Giant Skull website in the meantime.
