Xbox’s long-awaited Stranger Than Heaven presentation finally cleared up the biggest lingering question on the game — yes, it is indeed connected to the Yakuza franchise, also known as Like a Dragon. Specifically, Stranger Than Heaven will tell a brand-new story with new characters, chronicling the rise of the iconic Tojo Clan at the heart of the Yakuza series‘ soap opera story. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio also confirmed Stranger Than Heaven will launch in Winter 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The 28-minute presentation quite literally begins with the main character, Makoto Daito (played by Japanese actor Yu Shirota), announcing that he’s starting his own crime family, the “Tojo Clan.” Saying, “It’s for Yakuza types like us, sure, but it’s a place for people with nowhere else to go. Where they can live life on their terms.”
From there, RGG Studio Head and Executive Director Masayoshi Yokoyama introduces more of the concept of the game, starting with a story introduction.
Stranger Than Heaven takes place across five different time periods, starting in San Francisco in 1915, when a young boy named Makoto Daito sneaks aboard a ship to escape a “hard life in America.” Daiko is of mixed heritage, born from an American father and a Japanese mother, which Yokoyama says was a “rarity at the time.” Without getting too into the weeds, essentially, Makoto’s father passes after the family settles in San Francisco, eventually leading to the death of the boy’s mother, too. Lost and alone, he boards the ship to try to find a new life in Japan.
Aboard the ship, he befriends another boy named Yu Shinjo, and the two meet an international smuggler named Orpheus, played by Snoop Dogg (who also performs the game’s main theme), who inexplicably changes their lives and sets them on the path of organized crime. Another character in the game is played by Snoop Dogg’s son Cordell Broadus, although the studio won’t currently share details on who this important character is.

The game’s latest trailer introduces quite literally nearly two-dozen characters, suggesting that this story will be just as sweeping and convoluted as what you’d expect from any Yakuza game. But Stranger Than Heaven’s defining feature, taking a bit of inspiration from Yakuza 5, is that it lets players explore five different cities, each one chronicling a different period of Daiko’s life, and rise to power as he works for Orpheus. Yu Shinjo seems to be the other major character of the game, both a friend and rival to Makoto, played by Dean Fujioka. He also seems to appear in all five time periods.
And now we officially know the setting for each time period, with each one based on a real-life city in Japan. You can see the time periods below, with much more detail given to each in the full video.
- 1915 – Kokura, Fukuoka
- 1929 – Kure, Hiroshima
- 1943 – Minami, Osaka
- 1951 – Atami, Shizuoka
- 1965 – Kamurocho, Shinjuku
Yokoyama says a “tremendous secret” will happen in that last section, so the studio won’t be sharing any gameplay details for it right now.

But on the subject of gameplay, the main focus in this presentation is on Makoto’s unique “ability” to recognize and memorize sound and musical composition. He can remember sounds like sweeping, neighbours’ snoring, animal barks, enemies in combat, and much more. These sounds change with time of day, weather, etc. Then, by collaborating with composers, Makoto can turn these sounds into original compositions to use as a showman.
Being a “showman” seems to be one of the major minigames of Stranger Than Heaven, letting you choose the artists for your lineup, promote the shows, and earn money. You’ll also need to scout new singers and musicians (oftentimes played by real singer-songwriters like Tori Kelly) for your productions. Again, the full video introduces some of the unique singers Makoto will meet.
Finally, the showcase gives a brief look at the Stranger’s Than Heaven’s combat, which looks more than a little similar to the Yakuza games. Apparently, players control the left and right sides of Makoto separately, with the left side mapped to LB and LT, and the right side RB and RT. Combat then puts a huge focus on the timing of attacks, letting you charge attacks up and unleash them at the right time for extra damage. You’ll also be able to use a variety of different weapons, from knives and hammers to guns.
