New Mario Kart Game Announced for Mobile 1

The Mario Kart series is finally racing its way onto mobile.

Nintendo announced in a tweet that Mario Kart Tour will make its way to mobile devices at some point between March 2018 and March 2019. While no specific date was given the company did say that the “finish line is near,” which could mean that we see Mario Kart Tour sooner rather than later.

This news comes off the heels of Nintendo’s confirmation that they are shutting down their first mobile app, Miitomo, in May of this year. Since the launch of Miitomo back in March of 2016, Nintendo has launched three other smartphone games, Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. In addition to games, the company has released a number of companion apps for the Nintendo Switch, such as Parental Controls and Nintendo Switch Online.

Speaking of Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo also announced a launch date for the systems online services. In its current state, the app’s voice chat can only be used when playing Splatoon 2, but that should change when Nintendo Switch online launches in September of this year. No other details were given at this time but Nintendo has previously stated that their online services will cost around $29.99 per year.

All of Nintendo’s apps have been free to play, or at least free to start, but it remains to be seen if Mario Kart Tour will continue this trend. The last Mario Kart came to come out was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch, which was a remake of Mario Kart 8 for Wii U.
