As October and Halloween grow nearer, here are some new and old, interesting anime series to check out in the coming weeks.
Anime fans are living in a great time right now! It is a fun time to be watching some Jujutsu Kaisen, some Bleach, and some consistent episodes of One Piece. October 2023 will mark the beginning of a new season of anime series, all bringing some new flavours to bless our TVs, laptops and other media-watching devices.
We wanted to highlight some lesser known series that have some high potential to be great, based on the trailers and knowledge from its manga counterparts. Whether it is across Crunchyroll, Disney+, HiDive or Netflix, we chose some peculiar titles to check out for the spookiest month of the year. Here is a list of some anime to enjoy in October 2023!
The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch (A-Real) — October 1 — Crunchyroll
This one is a really fun, comedic fantasy anime series that will brighten your day. Just from the trailer alone I was smiling and abashed to see which plot points were shown. Essentially, a lonely witch named Alyssa in the woods finds and raises a human baby. She names the baby Viola and 16 years later Alyssa realizes that Viola grows way too much than she imagined. With the opposite appearances, this is said to be a wild funny show with the mother-daughter relationship at the heart of it.
Shy (8bit) — October 1 — Crunchyroll
Think My Hero Academia meets Komi Can’t Communicate. It is the 21st century and war has ceased around the world. So-called “Heroes” have taken on the mantle to keep the peace around the world by having various heroes represent each country. In Japan, there is a young girl named Shy who is also severely shy, yet Superman-level strong. I am hoping it will be some cute, quirky comedy with a mix of some good action.
Under Ninja (Tezuka Productions) — October 5 — Crunchyroll
If you are craving for an anime series similar to the spy aspects from Spy x Family, this one might be for you. It is less on the comedy side and more serious though. It involves a lot of ninjas, as the title alludes to. A non-government-controlled organization called NIN (National Intelligence of NINJA) carries out assassinations and sabotage missions in secret. Then, there is an organization that fights against them called UN (Under Ninja). Despite the silly premise of ninjas, this one seems to have some cutting-edge action.
Good Night World (NAZ) — October 12 — Netflix
This anime series had one of the most intriguing premises of them all! Good Night World revolves around two worlds: the online game world Planet and the real world. In the game world of Planet, there is a powerful four-person team called The Akabane Family, serving as a pseudio-family in the game. However, unbeknownst to the players in real-life, the four players are actually real world family members who have been estranged. The story unfolds as they take on missions online, fight with other guilds, and begin to have entanglements in their real-life lives.
Pluto (Studio M2) — October 26 — Netflix
From the mind that created the sci-fi mystery 20th Century Boys, Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto has now received an anime adaptation. This sci-fi mystery, thriller was praised for its reimagining of the Astro Boy world. It follows Europol robot detective Gersicht as he attempts to solve a case linked to the deaths of robots and humans around the world, where all the victims have been intentionally shaped like horns with heads. This is a good one to tickle that mystery itch, or if you also enjoy murder podcasts.
