While the 2022 Golden Globes did not air on TV this year, following lots of criticism, the winners list has been revealed with a big, historic surprise.
The 2022 Golden Globes still occurred without a full broadcast production to honour the nominees. However, NBC said that it will be taking this year to re-think and re-vamp the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). This is the organization of entertainment journalists responsible for voting for nominees and winners, and the issue was there was a lack of diversity with no Black members on the panel at all. Despite the controversy, the awards ceremony continued behind closed doors.
While the glitz and glamour were hidden this year, many great winners emerged. West Side Story and The Power of the Dog proved to be top contenders at this year’s awards ceremony as both movies received three awards each. The Best Actress nominations were notable with nominees such as Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga, and Kristen Stewart. But it was Nicole Kidman who came out on top in the Drama category—making this her sixth Golden Globe win.
The lead of West Side Story, Rachel Zegler also won in the Best Picture Musical/Comedy category, snagging her first Golden Globe. More remarkable firsts include Will Smith and Andrew Garfield’s first wins in their respective categories for King Richard and Tick, Tick… Boom!
While the movie competitors duked it out, the television categories were also wild! Michaela Jaé Rodriguez made history by being the first openly trans person to win a Golden Globe Award for her role in Pose. She immediately posted about her triumph on her Instagram page, “This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals. They will see that it is more than possible. They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS. To my young LGBTQAI babies WE ARE HERE the door is now open now reach the stars!”
